A helyi tsz mezőőrének és a háziipari szövetkezetben fonalhajtóként dolgozó feleségének második fiaként született. A három fiút nevelő házaspár méhészkedésből és háztáji cukorrépa-termesztésből tartotta el a családot. Tizennégy évesen elkerült szülővárosából, és a budapesti I. István Közgazdasági Szakközépiskola tanulója lett. Mivel albérletet nem tudott volna fizetni – a Pénzügyi és Számviteli Főiskolán (PSZF) folytatott tanulmányai idején is éjszakás kollégiumi nevelőtanár maradt. 1974-től a Pénzügyminisztérium alkalmazottja volt, ahol a bevételi főigazgatóságon, majd a titkárságon dolgozott. Közben elvégezte a Közgazdasági Egyetemet, és ledoktorált. Disszertációja a Lakossági hitelezés és betétgyűjtés alakulása, továbbfejlesztésének lehetőségei címet viseli. A PM Bevételi Főigazgatóságán megtanulta, hogyan lehet a mérlegben gyorsan átlátni az összefüggéseket és kiszúrni a hibákat, a vállalati kapcsolattartás során pedig remek kommunikációs képességekre tett szert. 1983-ban a Mezőgazdasági és Élelmezésügyi Minisztériumba került, mint osztályvezető, kisebb fizetésért és alacsonyabb beosztásba. A döntő érv a beigért szolgálati lakás volt. Ezekben az években vált a vadászat fő szenvedélyévé. 1986-ban a Magyar Hitelbank főosztályvezetője, majd 1989-től a Kereskedelmi és Hitelbank, vezérigazgató-helyettese lett, itt stratégiai feladatokat kellett ellátnia. 1991-ben Csepi Lajos, az Állami Vagyonügynökség (ÁVÜ) vezérigazgatója felkérte Csányit a Budapest Bank (BB) elnök-vezérigazgatói posztjára. A kormány által már eldöntött jelölésre Csányi igent mondott, ám Csepi váratlanul értesítette, hogy a posztot pályázat útján fogják betölteni, mert „fölmerült Bokros Lajos neve is”. Csányi Sándor közölte, hogy nem pályázik, ekkor arra kérték, hogy egy önéletrajzot adjon be, de ezt sem tette meg. 1992-től a OTP Bank Rt. elnök-vezérigazgatója lett. Csányitól az első hónapban mind a 215 vezető megkapta a felmondólevelét, és csak 150-en vehették kézbe az újbóli kinevezést.
